Myanmar earthquake: 6.4 magnitude hits, tremors felt in Thailand (video)
A significant earthquake of 6.4 magnitude jolted Myanmar at 8.37am today, as confirmed by the Earthquake Observation Division of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). The epicentre was noted to be around 100 kilometres in the northwest direction from the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) placed the epicentre of this seismic event approximately 76 kilometres southwest of the Kengtung township, located in Shan State, Myanmar. The earthquake occurred at a depth of nine kilometres.
The main seismic event was followed by three aftershocks, each recorded at magnitudes of 4.1, 3.5, and 3.4 respectively.
Residents across various districts in Thailand reported feeling the tremors. These districts include Mueang, Mae Suay, and Mae Sai in Chiang Rai; Saraphi and Mueang in Chiang Mai, the Mueang district of Lamphun, certain regions of Nan, and the Lak Si district in Bangkok.
The Myanmar earthquake’s impact was also felt in the northern Mae Hong Son province and northeastern provinces of Udon Thani and Khon Kaen.
Arun Pinta, the head of the disaster prevention and mitigation office in Chiang Mai, reported that occupants of high-rise buildings and individuals at the Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital experienced the tremors for approximately five seconds, reported Bangkok Post.
Arun confirmed that no damage to reservoirs or dams in the northern province has been reported till now. However, an ongoing survey in all districts aims to assess potential damage caused by the Myanmar earthquake.
A video captured in the Mae Ai district of Chiang Mai province shows the severity of the 6.4 magnitude quake. The footage reveals how the earthquake, originating from Myanmar, caused tremors in a store today.
In Pai district, Mae Hong Son province, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 and a depth of 2 kilometres rattled the area, resulting in tremors felt across four provinces. Read more HERE.
