November 24: South lashed by storms, 10 provinces on flood alert

Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a severe weather warning for today, November 24, as heavy rainfall and storms continue to batter the lower South. Ten provinces are expected to face widespread downpours covering 70% of the region, with potential flash floods and runoff.

The provinces under threat include Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Krabi, Trang, and Satun. The heavy rain is being triggered by a strong low-pressure system hovering over the lower Andaman Sea and Malaysia, combined with a persistent northeast monsoon affecting the Gulf of Thailand, the South, and the Andaman Sea.

Meanwhile, waves in the Gulf of Thailand and offshore in the Andaman Sea are expected to reach two to three metres. In stormy areas, wave heights may exceed three metres. Eastern coastal residents are advised to beware of crashing waves.

In contrast, upper Thailand is experiencing a slight temperature increase of one to two degrees Celsius (°C). While mornings remain cool to cold in the north and northeast, other regions such as the Central, East, and upper South are seeing chilly mornings with patchy fog.
