December 5 weather: Bangkok, south hit by downpours, haze persists

Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning today, December 5, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across 24 provinces, with Bangkok and the upper southern region among the hardest hit. Meanwhile, upper Thailand continues to face chilly morning temperatures.

From now until tomorrow evening, people in southern provinces should brace for torrential downpours, especially in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, and Pattani. The department advised residents to be cautious of flash floods and accumulated rainfall.

Meanwhile, in the northeast and eastern regions, light rain and thunderstorms are expected in some areas, while the rest of upper Thailand remains cool during the early hours.

The TMD also raised an alert for 10 provinces expected to be most severely affected by rain, due to a moderate cold air mass from China spreading over northern Thailand, the northeast, and the South China Sea. This weather pattern is drawing moisture from the east, impacting the lower northeast, central, eastern, and southern regions, as well as the Gulf of Thailand.

Air quality in Bangkok, the central region, north, and east remains moderate to poor due to weak air circulation, leading to PM2.5 dust and haze accumulation.
