Police subdue armed suspect after car theft in Phitsanulok
A dramatic police chase unfolded yesterday when a suspect attempted to steal a vehicle from a car dealership in Phitsanulok province. The suspect was eventually subdued after a tense confrontation that left two officers injured.
The incident began when police from Highway Station 3, Sub-Division 5, Thalang, received a report yesterday, December 10, about a white Mitsubishi Pajero with the registration number กท 8437 from Uttaradit, speeding through a checkpoint at Thangam, Wat Bot district.
Four officers from the highway station quickly mobilised, pursuing the suspect with two patrol cars. The chase culminated near an intersection at Tha Pho subdistrict, where the police managed to ram the suspect’s vehicle, causing it to lose control and crash onto the central reservation, severely damaging the front of the car.
Upon exiting the car, 31 year old Korakot, armed with a knife, charged at the officers, injuring two. Prateep, one of the officers, sustained wounds to his left abdomen and left leg, while Peerawat, another officer, was hurt in his right abdomen and left leg.
During the struggle to disarm Korakot, Prateep resorted to using an M16 rifle, firing two shots that hit Korakot in the groin and right hand, effectively incapacitating him. The suspect was apprehended and later identified as a resident of Chon Buri province.
“The suspect was aggressive and did not hesitate to attack.”
The injured officers, Prateep and Peerawat, were transported to Phitsanulok Hospital by the Prasatboonsathan Foundation rescue team. Their conditions stabilised, and they remained under medical supervision. Korakot was taken to Buddhachinaraj Hospital under police custody for treatment.
In the subsequent investigation, 46 year old Pacharapong revealed that the Mitsubishi Pajero belonged to a friend, 30 year old Em, who had left it at the dealership for sale. Korakot had posed as a potential buyer, requesting to test drive the vehicle with a salesperson.
After the test drive, when they returned to the dealership, the salesperson exited the vehicle, at which point Korakot accelerated and fled. It was also discovered that he had stopped to refuel at a petrol station without paying before continuing his escape, leading to the police pursuit that ended in Phitsanulok.
Police have initially charged Korakot with theft and attempted murder of law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Police have stationed officers at the hospital around the clock to prevent any escape attempts.
Once medical clearance is granted, Korakot will be taken into custody to face further legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.
