A TikTok user shared a cautionary tale about encountering a scammer posing as a fortune teller, who managed to trick her into transferring money. The incident sparked significant online discussion, with many commenting on the scam’s credibility.

Thitapa, nickname Sense, (TikTok account @sensethitapa) shared her experience with Khaosod Online yesterday, August 7, at around 11.20am. The encounter occurred the previous day while she was sitting at a beverage booth. A stranger approached her, claiming she had a fortunate aura and began making surprisingly accurate predictions about her life. Intrigued, she engaged in conversation with him.

The man sat down at her table and produced a crumpled piece of paper, asking her to hold it in her hand. He then asked her to think of her favourite number. She chose 333. He also inquired about her and her boyfriend’s ages, to which she replied they were both 28 years old. He then claimed that if the number in the paper matched the one he had written down, it signified good fortune and that her luck would improve. Astonishingly, when she opened her hand, the numbers matched.

Following this, he presented her with three amounts: 1,100 baht, 2,100 baht, and 3,100 baht, asking her to choose one, implying that the one she chose would determine her level of wealth. She chose 3,100 baht, and he told her she needed to donate this amount to an orphanage to clear her karma.

Thitapa argued with him, stating she had no money and only 500 baht in cash. The man insisted, eventually settling on a transfer of 333 baht, corresponding to her chosen number. Feeling pressured, she complied and transferred the money. The man left immediately after receiving the payment, making it clear his primary objective was to obtain money.

Thitapa further explained that the man claimed she would study abroad within the year, which resonated with her as she had recently returned from studying overseas. This added to the illusion of his fortune-telling abilities. He even gave her a small, round object, claiming it was a charm. She has since discarded it.

Notorious scammer

After he finished his predictions, Thitapa asked if he was a fortune teller. He denied it, claiming to be a monk from a famous temple. He gave her his LINE contact and showed chats from others who had been scammed, with some transferring as much as 30,000 baht.

Upon sharing her story with friends, they confirmed the man was a known scammer who had been in the news recently. Some of her friends had similar encounters, suggesting this was part of a larger operation. Posting the story on TikTok, she received numerous questions about why she didn’t leave or realise it was a scam. She admitted that at the time, she was curious and somewhat believed his fortune-telling, which kept her engaged.

Sense has since contacted her bank, hoping to freeze the transaction. Although she doesn’t expect a refund, she wants to prevent the scammer from accessing the money. The bank advised her to report the incident to the police and provide documentation for potential legal action, reported KhaoSod.
