Sino-Thai says MEA dome collapse linked to powerful windstorm
Following the collapse of a steel dome roof at a Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) training centre in Samut Prakan, yesterday, February 9, a construction company issued a statement today, stating a powerful, previously unrecorded windstorm as the cause.
Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, which partnered with Transcode Co., Ltd. under the ST-TC joint venture, issued a public statement today, February 10, regarding the structural failure that occurred around 10.30am at one of the seven buildings within the MEA Training Centre project in Bang Phli.
The joint venture was reportedly contracted to develop the 1.185-billion-baht MEA facility in Bang Phli district, comprising seven buildings.
The steel-framed roof structure that collapsed, completed in November last year, covered an outdoor antenna training ground and was valued at approximately 15 million baht, according to Jarunat Jiraratstatit, Managing Director of Sino-Thai Engineering.

He added that the collapse occurred during what he described as an unusually strong windstorm, which he claimed had never been recorded in the area before.
Jarunat said four people sustained injuries and were immediately taken to the hospital. Two had already been discharged, and the remaining two were expected to return home by today. He confirmed there were no fatalities or missing persons.
Relevant officials conducted a joint inspection of the scene and found that the collapsed structure was a single-storey, open-air facility measuring 25 by 53 metres, with a height of 15 metres. The building had a sloped roof and was made of fabricated steel.

The company reported that the damage did not affect nearby communities or public infrastructure.
Jarunat stated that the structure had been built in strict compliance with engineering standards and construction plans, under constant supervision and with regular inspections from the project’s client representatives.
The company would work with the MEA to investigate the incident thoroughly and identify the exact cause as quickly as possible, he added.
He also confirmed that the structure was covered under construction insurance and that the company would rebuild the facility within the agreed contractual timeline.
