Foreign tourist finds used syringe on plate at Phuket hotel buffet
A family holiday meal at a Phuket hotel has raised food safety concerns on March 17 after a foreign Facebook user said their group found what appeared to be a used syringe on a plate at an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet.
The incident was shared via a Facebook post, written in traditional Chinese, by Huang Xiaoting (黃小婷) in the group “流浪曼谷60天(公開社團)”.
The poster wrote that the trip was to celebrate their younger brother’s birthday, with five adults and three children travelling to Thailand and staying in Phuket.

In the post, they said the family ate at the hotel’s seafood buffet for about an hour and shared a plate filled with shrimp and clams. After the food was finished, they noticed a used syringe in the empty plate.
They added that the shrimp had been taken with tongs, one or two pieces at a time. The family then alerted staff, and the server removed the plate.
Before it was taken away, they quickly snapped a photo as evidence and decided not to eat any more.

The poster said the server and the manager dealt with the complaint. The manager offered a 50% discount and promised an update on the hotel’s inquiry the following day, but the family declined, saying they did not want any discount and only wanted to understand how a syringe could end up on a plate.
Huang emphasised it was not a typical buffet complaint, such as an insect or metal shavings, but what they believed was a used syringe.
Huang asked other group members what steps the family should take to protect themselves and whether the syringe could pose a risk of infectious disease. They added that they had asked for it to be sent for testing, but were unsure what to do next.
Elsewhere, a customer was injured after finding glass fragments in a spaghetti dish at a popular pizza chain, prompting safety concerns. They reportedly bit into the fragments, mistaking them for crispy bacon, and cut their mouth and hand while removing them.
