Phetchabun council candidate jailed for drink driving

A local election candidate in Phetchabun province has found himself at the centre of a scandal after reportedly being involved in a shocking five-vehicle collision while allegedly drunk.
Chaiwat, a former municipal council member and current candidate for the Bueng Sam Phan subdistrict municipal council election, was arrested after the incident, where he was found to be over the legal alcohol limit.
The crash occurred in Bueng Sam Phan district, where Chaiwat’s vehicle collided with four other cars. Police from the Bueng Sam Phan District Police Station quickly arrived on the scene and noted that Chaiwat showed clear signs of alcohol intoxication.
His blood alcohol content (BAC) was measured at 341 milligrammes per cent, well above the legal limit. As a result, he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Following the crash, Chaiwat was handed over to the prosecutor, with the case going to the Wichian Buri Provincial Court. Chaiwat was sentenced by the Court to four months in prison for his actions. However, due to his confession, the sentence was reduced by half, and he will now serve two months in jail without the possibility of suspension.
Despite the ruling, Chaiwat appealed the sentence, requesting a delay so that he could continue his election campaign for the municipal council. He argues that the campaign is vital and insists that the public’s support should not be affected by his legal troubles, reported KhaoSod.
This incident has certainly raised questions about the integrity of local candidates, with many questioning whether Chaiwat should be allowed to continue campaigning while facing legal charges.
As the trial continues, voters in Bueng Sam Phan are left to decide whether they want a candidate with such a controversial past representing them.
The outcome of the appeal and the ongoing campaign will be closely watched, with many waiting to see if Chaiwat’s political ambitions will be derailed by his brush with the law.
