‘Eel of fortune’ has locals hooked on lucky lottery numbers (video)

Social media buzz grows as locals search for signs of fortune

A rare albino eel with golden markings was discovered by a villager in Phetchabun, central Thailand, sparking a local lottery frenzy as residents sought lucky numbers.

The fishy phenomenon emerged yesterday, September 25, after a video clip showing the striking eel went viral on social media. Filmed by Amnat Phonok, a resident of Phu Toei village in Wichian Buri district, the footage shows the eel’s unusual golden spots shimmering on its head and underbelly. The clip quickly gained traction, with eager lottery players interpreting the markings as auspicious signs.

While some claim the eel represents the number 81, others are convinced the clearer pattern reads 753, a number now being widely touted for the national lottery draw on October 1.

Amnat, who later spoke to reporters, revealed that the eel had originally been caught in a nearby canal by a local fisherman. Captivated by its rare appearance and the buzz it generated, Amnat purchased the eel, believing it might bring him good fortune.

“It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. There’s something special about it.”

He now keeps the eel in a tank at home, where curious neighbours and hopeful punters continue to visit, studying its unique patterns for hints at winning combinations, reported KhaoSod.

In rural parts of Thailand, such displays of natural oddities often become the focus of spiritual or superstitious attention. Unusual animals, particularly those with rare colourations or markings, are commonly viewed as omens, with villagers flocking to see them in hopes of divine insight.

As the October 1 lottery date approaches, enthusiasm around the “eel of fortune” shows no signs of slowing. Amnat, for his part, is simply enjoying the excitement and says he’s already placed his bets.

Whether the golden markings are truly a stroke of supernatural luck or just the product of eager imaginations remains to be seen. But in Phu Toei, one thing is certain: this slippery little celebrity has become the talk of the town.
