Thai man and Laotian girlfriend arrested for motorcycle theft

A Thai man and his Laotian girlfriend were apprehended for allegedly stealing a delivery rider’s motorcycle after the rider left the keys in the ignition while collecting an order in the Sukhaphiban 5 area. The suspects confessed to similar previous offences, with one previously stolen motorcycle already sold.

On April 1, Deputy Inspector Kittikarn Sinprakhop and a team from the Sai Mai Police Station arrested 39 year old Anukul and 30 year old Champa, a Laotian national, on charges of theft or possession of stolen goods. Champa also faced charges for being an illegal immigrant. The arrest took place at a resort in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district.

The arrests followed a complaint from a victim, a food delivery rider for a company, who reported that on March 26 at around 10am, he had parked his Honda Wave 125i motorcycle outside a restaurant in Or Ngoen, Sai Mai district, to collect a food order. Unfortunately, he left the key in the ignition.

Upon returning, he found the motorcycle missing and reported the incident. Police examined CCTV footage from the area and the escape route, revealing that the suspect had approached the restaurant on foot before stealing the motorcycle and fleeing towards the Watcharapol intersection via Sukhaphiban 5.

The police received a tip-off that the suspect and his girlfriend were staying at a resort. Upon investigation, they found Anukul and Champa in the room with the stolen motorcycle, which had been reported missing at Wang Thonglang Police Station.

Further inspection revealed a pink wallet belonging to Champa containing an ID card of a previous boyfriend and a Honda motorcycle key. Champa admitted to having no passport and entering Thailand illegally around three to four months ago.

Upon questioning, both suspects confessed to stealing the motorcycle in the Sai Mai area, which they had sold, and admitted the motorcycle found in their room was indeed stolen. The license plate had been removed and placed beside the bed, reported KhaoSod.

Police have charged the suspects and referred the case to Wang Thonglang Police Station for legal proceedings.
