Rider arrested for stealing over 30,000 baht in foreign currency

Police apprehended a rider accused of stealing over 30,000 baht in foreign currency entrusted to him for delivery. The suspect, 24 year old Poramet, allegedly blocked all contact with the sender after taking the package containing the money.

The arrest occurred on April 1 at around 4pm in a house located on Soi Phahon Yothin 58, Intersection 61, Sai Mai district, Bangkok. The officers involved included Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom, Police Major General Noppasilp Poonsawat, and several others from Sai Mai Police Station. Poramet faces charges of theft using a vehicle to transport stolen goods.

The seized items comprised New Zealand currency: 10 notes of 100 dollars, one note of 50 dollars, one note of 20 dollars, and one note of 10 dollars. Additionally, five notes of 500 Singapore dollars were recovered, alongside a black-and-red Honda Wave 125i motorcycle.

The incident began when the victim reported to Sai Mai Police Station on March 31 at approximately 5.50pm. The victim had used an application to send a package to a sister, with Poramet collecting it from their Sai Mai residence.

The package was intended for a friend’s house in Rat Phatthana subdistrict, Saphan Sung district. However, when the victim attempted to track the package via the app and phone, contact was lost as Poramet blocked all communication channels.

The package contained foreign currency: 1,080 New Zealand dollars and 500 Singapore dollars, equivalent to approximately 33,681 baht (US$980). The victim, unable to contact Poramet, reached out to Kasama, the intended recipient, who confirmed non-receipt of the package. After multiple attempts to establish contact, the victim reported the incident to the police.

Following an investigation, police discovered Poramet residing on Soi Phahon Yothin 58, Intersection 61. They found him outside his house, where he confessed to the crime, admitting to hiding the money at home.

A subsequent search revealed the money concealed in a plastic bag under a speaker in front of the house. The police informed Poramet of his rights and charges before taking him to Sai Mai Police Station for legal proceedings.
