Community rallies after baby boy abandoned in Buriram
A newborn baby boy was found abandoned behind a house in Kan Dong district, Buriram province, sparking a community effort to rescue him and uncover the reasons behind the incident. The discovery took place yesterday when residents heard the cries of the infant and alerted police.
Police Lieutenant Parinya Yingngam, Deputy Inspector of Kan Dong Police Station, received a report from Kan Dong Hospital about a newborn baby found abandoned behind a local’s house. The incident occurred on yesterday, June 11. The police rushed to the scene to investigate.
The location was a single-storey concrete house in Moo 8, Dong Phlong Subdistrict, Kan Dong District, Buriram Province, situated along the Satuek-Kan Dong road. Behind the house, near a septic tank, they found the baby boy placed inside a plastic bag used for fabric softener and covered with grass.
The umbilical cord was still attached, and the baby was crying loudly, drawing attention from the surrounding area. Preliminary assessments indicated that the baby was healthy. The first responders provided initial medical care before transferring him to Kan Dong Hospital for further recovery.
Banhan Sudto, the 68 year old homeowner, shared his experience.
“I had just returned from tapping rubber and was about to rest when I heard a sound similar to the meowing of my five or six cats. However, it felt unusual because my cats typically don’t make noise at this time. Upon closer listening, I heard a strange sound, prompting me to search around until I found the newborn baby and called the police.”
Another local, 62 year old Saman Srimueang, who also discovered the baby, recounted her story.
“After helping the baby, I inspected the area and was shocked to see marks on the toilet lid, suggesting someone had tried to open it. I believe the baby’s mother attempted to open the toilet lid to dispose of the baby but couldn’t, so she left him beside the septic tank.”
Further investigation by the police revealed that the baby belonged to a grade 8 student from a nearby village. Preliminary findings indicated that the young mother was unaware of her pregnancy. Fearing her grandmother’s reaction, she secretly gave birth and abandoned the baby to avoid detection, reported KhaoSod.
