A 34 year old man is seeking legal assistance after being tricked into marriage and deceived out of a 2 million-baht inheritance by a village headman’s daughter. After the alleged deceit, the man was expelled from the house and his wife’s former lover moved in. He now hopes the lawyer will help him reclaim his lost assets.

The man, a home renovation worker, recounts meeting the 27 year old woman via a dating app. After a month of conversation and assistance in a legal case related to his father’s inheritance, she invited him to live with her. After one to two weeks, they registered their marriage.

The man gave his wife a dowry of 200,000 baht (US$5,517) in cash and 7 baht of gold and repaid the 60,000 baht she had lent him for the inheritance case.

The wife then took his inheritance money, asking him to pay off her household debts, which totalled around 2 million baht. Three months into their marriage, she ceased communication with him, denying him food and a place to sleep before forcing him out of the house. After his eviction, his wife’s ex-boyfriend moved back in, reported KhaoSod.

Feeling deeply hurt, he believes he was tricked into the marriage and deceived into paying off her debts with his 2 million baht inheritance. After six months, he reported the events to the local police, but his claims were ignored, possibly due to the influence of his wife’s father, who serves as the village headman.

“I want to reclaim my rights, particularly the money I lost. The woman contacted me to get a divorce, but I insisted on fighting for my rights. I will never reconcile with her.”

The lawyer, Ronnarong Kaewpetch, explained that the case involves separate property, which is considered personal assets. However, after marriage, any renovation to the house cannot be claimed.

As for the dowry, it cannot be reclaimed unless there is an agreement to split the gold in half. Any assets obtained after marriage are considered marital property and must be divided equally. In this case, the man can only reclaim his inheritance, and if they divorce, the assets must be split in half.
