Wake-up call: Snoozing Thai driver startled by cop’s ‘wife’ threat

A sleepy driver in Thailand got the shock of his life when police threatened him with a visit from his wife if he didn’t wake up and get a move on.
A 40 year old Thai man fell asleep at the wheel, his pickup truck idling at a red light in bustling Nan City, at 12.30am today, March 12. The vehicle had been parked with the engine running since 11pm, sparking alarm among locals and passers-by.
Concerned villagers, along with rescue workers, tried everything to rouse the driver. Shouts, knocks, and even vigorous rocking of the vehicle failed to make him stir. After an hour of relentless attempts, they realised their efforts were in vain.
The 191 radio centre of Nan Provincial Police sprang into action after receiving a distressed report about the stationary truck.
Officers were dispatched to the scene, coordinating with rescue teams and advanced life support units from Nan Hospital.

As police and locals converged on the scene, there were discussions about breaking the window, fearing the man inside might be unwell. But then, an officer had a brilliant idea and shouted, “Your wife is here to get you!”
The effect was instantaneous. The man jolted awake, bewildered and disoriented, opening the door to a bemused crowd, reported Amarin TV.
Once the police explained the situation, he quickly grasped what had happened. It turns out, he’d driven past his house by a mere 300 metres before succumbing to exhaustion.
The driver revealed he had been assisting with a relative’s funeral for several days, and fatigue had finally caught up with him. He recalled driving normally until stopping at the red light, where he then drifted into a heavy sleep. It wasn’t until he heard talk of his wife’s intervention that he snapped back to reality.
The police, while amused by the unconventional wake-up call, issued a stern warning about the perils of nodding off behind the wheel. They generously helped him return safely home.
This peculiar episode showed the surprising power of a spouse’s influence, especially when it comes to stirring someone from slumber.
Be afraid! Be very afraid, of your wife!
