Landslide warning issued at Khao Yai National Park
A landslide warning has been issued at Khao Yai National Park due to heavy rain, causing soil and rocks to slide onto Thanarat Road. Park officials urge caution, especially near the waterfall.
Heavy rainfall has led to a dangerous landslide situation at Khao Yai National Park, resulting in soil and rocks cascading down from over 100 metres high.
Chaiya Huayhongthong, head of the national park, highlighted that the ongoing rainy season, coupled with strong winds, has caused trees to fall onto power lines, leading to power outages and landslides along Thanarat Road. The affected area stretches from the shrine gate entrance of the park up to a small waterfall.
“The soil, unable to absorb the excessive rainwater, has led to multiple landslides with large rocks blocking the road.”
The landslide occurred near kilometre 26, creating significant obstructions that rendered the road impassable. Local officials have deployed personnel and grading vehicles to clear the debris from the road. The situation poses a substantial risk to travellers, prompting park officials to advise visitors to exercise extreme caution in the affected areas. This issue has been a recurring problem during the rainy season.
Chaiya further mentioned that landslides in this particular area have been a perennial issue during the rainy season. The matter has been brought to the advisory committee’s meeting to discuss long-term preventive measures. However, the area’s geological composition, primarily sandstone mountains, complicates the situation.
These mountains are prone to erosion and collapse, especially given their steep nature. Implementing a permanent solution would require substantial funding, and the planning and surveying phase is currently underway.
Caution advised
Visitors to Khao Yai National Park are urged to remain vigilant and heed the warnings issued by park authorities. The natural beauty of the park, while alluring, comes with inherent risks that are exacerbated during the rainy season. The park officials are doing their best to ensure the safety of all visitors, but cooperation from the public is crucial.
“We are working tirelessly to find a viable solution to this problem, but it will take time and resources.”
The park’s management is committed to preserving the safety and enjoyment of one of Thailand’s most cherished natural reserves.
The advisory committee, along with park management, is exploring various methods to stabilise the terrain and prevent future landslides. This includes potential engineering solutions, reforestation projects, and improved drainage systems to handle excessive rainfall. The goal is to create a safer environment for both visitors and wildlife within the park.
As the rainy season continues, the park officials will provide regular updates and advisories to keep the public informed about the current conditions. Travellers planning to visit Khao Yai National Park should stay updated on weather conditions and follow any guidelines or restrictions put in place by park authorities, reported KhaoSod.
