Tropical storm Kalmaegi batters Thailand with heavy rain
TMD urges caution as severe conditions threaten widespread areas
A powerful tropical storm is sweeping across Thailand, bringing heavy rain and flash flood risks to dozens of provinces as residents brace for worsening weather.
From 6pm yesterday, November 7, to 6pm today, November 8, the weather across Thailand is expected to remain unsettled, with widespread thunderstorms and cooler mornings in the north, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).
Northern provinces such as Phetchabun, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, and Phichit will experience storms in around 60% of the area. Morning temperatures will range from 19 to 22°C, rising to daytime highs of 29 to 31°C.
The northeastern region is forecast to be hit hardest, with thunderstorms affecting 80% of the area. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Ubon Ratchathani, Amnat Charoen, Sisaket, Yasothon, Mukdahan, Surin, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Buriram, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Chaiyaphum. Temperatures will range between 22 to 25°C in the morning and climb to 28 to 30°C during the day. Winds will blow from the northeast at 10 to 20km/h.

In the central region, about 60% of the area will be affected by thunderstorms, particularly in Lop Buri, Saraburi, Nakhon Sawan, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, and Ayutthaya. Morning temperatures will hover between 23 to 24°C, with highs of 30 to 32°C. Wind speeds in this region will be around 10 to 20km/h.
The eastern region, including coastal provinces, is expected to see thunderstorms in 60% of the area. Heavy rain is likely in Sa Kaeo, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Nayok, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C in the morning and rise to 29 to 32°C in the afternoon. Winds will come from the southwest at 15 to 30km/h. Sea conditions will be rough, with waves reaching 2 to 3 metres, and over 3 metres in areas experiencing thunderstorms.

In the southern region, strong southwesterly winds will bring heavy rain to some areas. In the Andaman Sea, waves are expected to reach between 2 and 3 metres, with heights exceeding 3 metres during thunderstorms. In the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves will reach around 2 metres and rise higher during storms, reported KhaoSod.
Mariners are urged to navigate with caution and avoid storm-affected zones. Small boats in the Andaman Sea should remain ashore.
Bangkok and surrounding areas will also experience thunderstorms over 60% of the area. Some parts may see heavy downpours. Morning temperatures are forecast to range from 24 to 25°C, with highs of 30 to 32°C. Winds will blow from the southwest at 10 to 20km/h.
