Golden eel discovery sparks lottery frenzy in Kamphaeng Phet
A peculiar discovery in Kamphaeng Phet has captivated local villagers, who flocked to witness a rare golden eel found by a farmer. The unusual find sparked a wave of superstitions and dreams among the community, leading to a frenzy of lottery number predictions.
At 3pm yesterday, news reporters visited house number 17 in Moo 4, Wang Yang Subdistrict, Khlong Khlung District, Kamphaeng Phet Province. This is the residence of 54 year old Sombat Srisawat, and his sister, 63 year old Saithong Soramat.
The siblings attracted a crowd of curious villagers eager to see the golden eel, a rare albino eel approximately 40 centimetres long that Sombat had caught in his rice field the day before. The eel had been making a commotion in the fishing trap, catching Sombat’s attention.
Sombat mentioned that in his 54 years, he had never seen a golden eel before. Although he had heard tales of such creatures, encountering one firsthand was a completely unexpected event. Believing the eel to be an omen of good fortune, he brought it home to show his family. Saithong shared that after discovering the eel, she dreamt that night of seeing three golden eels swimming in a basin, which she interpreted as a sign of impending luck.
The following day, Saithong invited neighbours over to witness the rare eel. They performed a ritual, using a Khan Mak (a traditional Thai offering set containing flowers, incense, and candles) to seek blessings and luck from the golden eel.
Additionally, they burned incense sticks in hopes of discerning lucky numbers for the upcoming lottery draw. Several villagers claimed to see the numbers 6 and 7 on the eel’s body, while others interpreted the incense smoke as forming the numbers 843 and 813.
Golden eel
Sombat recounted his experience of finding the golden eel. He explained that he had set up a fishing trap in his rice field the night before. Upon hearing a loud rustling sound, he checked the trap and was astonished to find the golden eel inside. He expressed his amazement, noting that despite hearing stories, he never thought he would find such a rare creature himself.
Saithong reiterated her belief that the golden eel was a sign of good fortune. She detailed her vivid dream, in which three golden eels were swimming with their heads touching in a basin, reported KhaoSod.
She firmly believed this was a symbolic message, promising luck. Despite this, Saithong remained uncertain whether there might be more golden eels in the area.
