Golden ‘Naga’ eel found in central Thailand sparks lottery frenzy
Villagers gather after fisherman reels in mysterious bright fish

A rare golden eel was discovered by a fisherman in central Thailand, drawing crowds and sparking hopes of good fortune among curious locals.
Residents of Kamphaeng Phet province were left stunned after a man discovered an unusually coloured golden eel, which some believe holds mystical powers and could bring good luck in the lottery.
The discovery was made in the early hours of yesterday, October 15, by 42 year old Anek Najaroen, who had been fishing in a rice field in Wang Yang subdistrict, Khlong Khlung district.
Anek was about to release the eel back into the water when he noticed something strange. Instead of swimming away, the creature calmly floated toward him and remained still, showing no signs of fear.
“It didn’t behave like any eel I’ve seen before. It was as if it wanted to stay with me.”
Captivated by its behaviour and shimmering golden colour, Anek decided to bring the eel home to show his family. He initially planned to release it at a nearby temple to protect it from being caught again, but after seeing how it interacted with humans, the family took it as a sign of good fortune and decided to keep it.
Neighbours flocked to Anek’s house to see the rare eel for themselves. Measuring 53 centimetres long, the creature had an elongated golden body and a head that some said resembled a naga, a mythical serpent believed in Thai culture to be a guardian of wealth and spiritual power.
As word of the golden “naga eel” spread, the Najaroen family held a small ritual, lighting incense and offering symbolic gifts to seek blessings. During the ceremony, the number 081 reportedly appeared, prompting a rush of interest ahead of the upcoming lottery draw, reported KhaoSod.
“We really believe this is a lucky sign. The eel chose us.”
The eel’s docile nature and rare colouring have only fuelled speculation that it’s more than just an unusual animal.
Locals now see it as a beacon of prosperity, and perhaps a ticket to the winning numbers.
