Maya Bay reopens after two-month environmental rehabilitation
Maya Bay, the iconic destination in Krabi’s Phi Phi Islands, will welcome visitors once more after a two-month closure for environmental rehabilitation.
The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), led by its Director-General Attapon Charoenchansa, confirmed the reopening of Maya Bay, Loh Samah Bay, and Lor Kor Bay, marking the end of their temporary closure from August 1 to September 30.
During this period, staff from Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park undertook significant efforts to safeguard the area’s fragile ecosystem. Buoys were maintained to protect coral reefs and ensure the safety of tourists as the region gears up for the high season.
Maya Bay, propelled to international fame by the Hollywood film The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio 23 years ago, continues to be a magnet for tourists eager to witness its pristine beauty.
The closure aimed to allow the natural environment to recover from the impact of tourism. Park officials have been vigilant in their efforts to balance conservation with tourism, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the bay’s splendour without compromising its ecological integrity.
Attapon Charoenchansa highlighted the importance of these measures, noting that the conservation efforts are crucial for the long-term sustainability of the area. The reopening is expected to draw a significant number of tourists, contributing to the local economy while promoting responsible tourism practices.
In preparation for the influx of visitors, the national park staff have not only focused on environmental protection but also on improving visitor safety. The maintenance of buoys and other infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to manage tourist activities and minimise environmental impact.
“We are committed to preserving the natural beauty of Maya Bay while ensuring that visitors can safely enjoy their experience.”
As the high season approaches, the reopening of Maya Bay is a significant step in the recovery of Krabi’s tourism sector, which has been heavily impacted by global travel restrictions in recent years. Officials are optimistic that with the new measures in place, Maya Bay will continue to be a top destination for eco-conscious travellers.
Tourists planning to visit Maya Bay are encouraged to follow guidelines and respect the natural environment. The successful reopening of the bay will depend on the combined efforts of park officials and visitors to maintain the ecological balance, reported Bangkok Post.
