Maya Bay, located on the idyllic Phi Phi Islands in Krabi province, has been named the 5th-best beach in the world for 2024 by Beach Atlas, a website based in the United Kingdom.

This prestigious recognition places Maya Bay at the top of the list not only in Thailand but also as the number one beach across the ASEAN region.

The announcement, which has placed Thailand firmly on the global map for pristine beach destinations, comes as a significant accolade for the country’s tourism industry. The list, which ranks the top 100 beaches worldwide, also includes Pattaya Beach in Chon Buri province at number 12 and Railay Beach, also in Krabi province, at number 66. This triple recognition underscores Thailand’s diverse and appealing shoreline offerings that cater to a wide range of tastes and preferences.

The beaches that have surpassed Maya Bay in the rankings include Bora Bora in French Polynesia taking the top spot, followed by Boulders Beach in South Africa at second place, Waikiki Beach in the United States at third, and Brazil’s Copacabana at fourth. The criteria for selection were extensive, considering the beaches’ aesthetic appeal, classic charm, party atmosphere, and lifestyle attributes.

The selection process involved input from travellers, photographers, and influencers, who were invited to cast their votes. The criteria not only focused on the natural beauty of these places but also took into account their value to the community, diversity of natural attractions, and cultural significance. These aspects are encapsulated in the DEI—Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—principles, which aim to acknowledge beaches that offer a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors.

This recognition is expected to boost tourism in Thailand, a sector that has been recovering steadily following the global challenges posed by the pandemic. The beaches’ rankings are likely to attract more visitors, drawn by the allure of Thailand’s stunning coastlines.

The inclusion of Pattaya Beach at number 12 is particularly noteworthy, as the city is often recognised for its vibrant nightlife and entertainment offerings. The ranking highlights the beach’s appeal beyond its party reputation, showcasing its scenic beauty and appeal as a daytime relaxation spot, reported Sanook.

Railay Beach’s position at number 66 affirms its status as an iconic climbing destination with its towering limestone cliffs and clear waters, which have long been a draw for adventure-seekers and nature enthusiasts.
