Lottery fever: Tarantula picks lucky number for upcoming draw

Mystical number draw fuels local superstition and ticket sales surge

A crowd gathered at a temple in central Thailand for a ritual where a tarantula selected lottery numbers, sparking fresh excitement among players.

Dozens of hopeful locals gathered today, September 12, behind Wat Bot Rat Sattha in Bang Rakam subdistrict, Pho Thong district, Ang Thong province, for a traditional ritual centred around the legendary Paya Bung, a revered, burrow-dwelling tarantula believed to predict lottery numbers.

Despite light evening rain, the faithful arrived with trays of flowers, incense sticks, candles, and three sets of paper numbered from 0 to 9. Participants dropped the papers into the burrow and waited for Paya Bung to select them, believed to be a spiritual sign.

In a two-stage reveal, the tarantula first brought out a single number, then two more. When the papers were collected and inspected, the numbers revealed were 8, 7, and 3, forming 873, a number that quickly spread through the crowd and across local social media channels.

The ritual, deeply rooted in local superstition and spiritual belief, is held regularly at the site and often draws large crowds ahead of national lottery draws. Many participants return each month, swearing by the creature’s uncanny ability to predict winning combinations.

“This is the number we’ve been waiting for,” said one excited local, holding up a photo of the chosen digits. “Paya Bung has never let us down.”

The buzz around 873 has already reached lottery vendors, where demand for tickets ending in the digits has surged, reported KhaoSod.

Officials at Wat Bot Rat Sattha say they welcome fortune seekers but encourage respectful behaviour during the rituals, reminding visitors that the tradition is part of local cultural heritage.

While sceptics may scoff, believers are already placing their bets and waiting to see if the tarantula’s latest pick will deliver a jackpot win.

In similar news, a man in Thailand was left puzzled after a green pit viper appeared at his front door three nights in a row, sparking interest from superstitious neighbours.

The snake was first spotted on August 28, coiled neatly on a shelf by the entrance. The snake returned the following night in a near-identical position, and again on the third night. Neighbours quickly took an interest, asking for the house number and interpreting the snake’s repeated visits as a sign of luck, suggesting numbers like 78, 780, 782, and 786.
