Thai Fruits Festival 2025 launched to boost domestic durian sales

DIT reports 96% of eastern region durian, 840,000 tonnes, harvested

The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) and the Thai Fresh Market Association have jointly initiated the Thai Fruits Festival 2025 by DIT to distribute quality durian and promote domestic consumption, aiming to support local fruit prices.

Goranij Nonejuie, Deputy Director General of the DIT, announced the collaboration with the Yes Bang Phli market in Samut Prakan to enhance fruit consumption as a part of this campaign.

During the peak harvest period in the eastern region, fruit prices have remained steady. The department is prioritising domestic consumption to maintain these prices, alongside export promotion efforts led by the Commerce Ministry.

The DIT reports that approximately 96% of durian from the eastern region, equating to 840,000 tonnes, has been harvested.

Of this, 70-75% is designated for export, with the remainder allocated for domestic use. Additionally, 210,000 tonnes of mangosteen have been harvested in the region, representing 80-85% of total production, and about 95% of this is intended for export.

During the festival, select high-quality durian, including some smaller sizes, is available at various price points.

Offers include the “golden minute” promotion, selling durian for 99 baht each, with special prices of 99 baht, 139 baht, and 199 baht per kilogramme, allowing consumers to choose based on their preferences.

Events are being held at 13 fresh markets in Bangkok and suburban areas throughout the fruit harvest season.

Goranij stated that the campaign aims to distribute over 50 tonnes of fruit daily through these markets. This initiative not only helps absorb produce from cultivation areas, contributing to stable fruit prices, but also provides consumers with access to quality Thai fruit at fair prices, reported Bangkok Post.

The DIT is hosting the fruit festival at 13 markets until August, with one event scheduled at Siam Square from June 19 to 22, showcasing premium fruit from renowned farms nationwide.

Thailand is the world’s leading exporter of durian, with the tropical fruit gaining popularity globally for its distinctive flavour and aroma. In recent years, exports have surged, particularly to countries like China, which is Thailand’s largest market for durian.
