Young woman in Soi Ratchada 13 assaulted, suspects charged

Attack sparks outrage as police vow swift justice for victim

Police are actively assisting a victim assaulted in Soi Ratchada 13, who, after being discovered with drugs, has developed mental health issues. The person is currently receiving treatment, while police have charged four suspects and are searching for another.

At 6pm yesterday, May 5 at Sutthisan Police Station, Doctor Thanakrit Jittareerat, assistant to the minister of public health, and Kanthas Phongphaiboonwetch, also known as Kan Jompalang, addressed the media following an incident where a young woman was attacked by teenagers in Soi Ratchada 13.

The assault came to light after a video surfaced online. The victim’s family reported her mental health issues, prompting coordination with the Ministry of Public Health for assistance.

Kanthas mentioned receiving a message on his social media page, Kan Jompalang, requesting help in locating the victim. A video of the altercation soon appeared online, leading him to Sutthisan Police Station, where he spoke with the station chief. Within an hour, they apprehended the suspects.

After the suspects’ arrest, the victim’s mother expressed a desire for assistance due to her daughter’s mental health condition. Kanthas coordinated with Doctor Thanakrit for help, as the family was aware of the victim’s long-term drug use, which likely affected her mental state.

He emphasised the importance of legal resolution over personal vendettas, commending the police’s swift action in apprehending the suspects, despite an officer being harmed during the incident.

Victim assault

Doctor Thanakrit stated that legal proceedings are a police matter. Upon arrival, he spoke with the victim, who was intermittently coherent and admitted to using drugs like ice and others.

Police tests confirmed drug presence in her urine, but no drugs were found in her possession. A psychologist confirmed her mental health condition, and arrangements were made for her treatment at Somdet Chaopraya Hospital. The victim’s family was urged to maintain vigilance and provide information on drug sources to the police.

During discussions, the victim’s family expressed distress over her repeated relapses into drug use despite previous rehabilitation attempts. A psychiatrist highlighted the impact of drugs on her mental health and the importance of a supportive environment for recovery.

Police Colonel Porntep Chalermkiat of Sutthisan Police Station confirmed the arrest and charging of four suspects for assault, with one, named Goi, still at large. Drug tests on the suspects were negative, though one had a past drug-related charge at 17, reported KhaoSod.

When questioned about expanding drug investigations in the area, Pol. Col. Porntep noted that the victim lived elsewhere but had issues in Sutthisan. The police have ongoing anti-drug operations, and local reports of drug activity at the incident site are regularly addressed by patrols. Further inspections of the area are underway
