Big Joke sends 300 southerners home for Songkran

Former police chief Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn has made Songkran celebrations even sweeter for over 300 southerners by sending them back home with free flights and VIP bus rides, easing the financial burden during tough economic times.

At Don Mueang International Airport, Big Joke, President of the Southern Association under Royal Patronage, personally waved off 320 people headed back to their hometowns as part of the annual Bring Southern People Back Home initiative. The project, sponsored by AirAsia, featured four flights, two to Hat Yai and one each to Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

“The project will continue as an annual tradition during the new year and Songkran festivals,” said Big Joke. “Tomorrow, we’ll send another 300 people back home on seven VIP buses. It’s our way of helping the southern people, especially when the cost of living is so high.”

The passengers, many of whom would normally face skyrocketing travel costs during peak holiday periods, were thrilled with the support.

One couple heading to Hat Yai admitted they would have spent a fortune on plane tickets, but thanks to the free service, they now have money left over to take care of their children.

“Without this project, we would’ve had to pay a lot for our tickets. It’s a big help, and now we can save money for our family,” the couple said.

Muslim passengers from Narathiwat were equally grateful.

“Even though we’re not flying to our final destination, we can easily reach it from Hat Yai. It saves us both time and money.”

For many, the project was a lifesaver. Even some government officials joined, including a police officer who was able to return home to pay respects to his parents.

“I’m lucky my shift didn’t clash with the travel dates. This project saved me a lot of money.”

This initiative is not new. It’s the fourth time the Southern Association has organised such a project, with previous efforts helping those affected by Covid-19 and supporting southern people during Thai New Year and Songkran.

The success of this year’s project continues to build on that momentum, creating an affordable and heartfelt homecoming for thousands of southern Thais during the festive season, reported Matichon.

The project is set to become a staple on the association’s calendar, ensuring that more southern people can return home for Songkran without breaking the bank.
