Wet and wild: Heavy rain, cool mornings sweep across Thailand

TMD urge residents to brace for shifting weather risks

Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned of widespread rain and cool mornings across several regions, urging farmers and residents to prepare for changing conditions.

An active low-pressure cell over Cambodia and the Gulf is pulling moist air into upper Thailand, while a weakening high-pressure system continues to cover the area. A collision of easterly and southeasterly winds across the north is driving more rain nationwide. Farmers are advised to guard against potential crop damage, and residents across the upper regions and the south should monitor for localised flooding.

The forecast for 6pm yesterday, October 30, to 6pm today, October 31, is as follows:

In northern Thailand, mornings will be cool with scattered thundershowers expected in Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun. Daytime highs will hover between 33 and 34°C, with morning lows of 20 to 25°C. Mountain tops will be colder, dipping to 8 to 17°C. Winds will blow from the northeast at 10 to 15 km/hr.

The northeast will experience scattered thunderstorms with isolated heavy showers in areas including Chaiyaphum, Roi Et, Khon Kaen, and Ubon Ratchathani. Morning temperatures are forecasted at 22 to 24°C, rising to 30 to 32°C in the afternoon. Mountain regions will feel colder, with temperatures between 15 and 19°C. Northeasterly winds will range from 10 to 25 km/hr.

Central Thailand can expect fairly widespread thundershowers and heavy rain in provinces such as Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, and Ayutthaya. Temperatures will range from 22 to 25°C in the morning and 30 to 33°C during the day. Winds will be northeasterly at 10 to 20 km/hr.

In the east, areas like Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, and Rayong will see fairly widespread rain with isolated heavy downpours. Temperatures are forecasted at 24 to 25°C minimum and 30 to 33°C maximum. Winds from the northeast will range from 15 to 35 km/hr, with sea waves reaching up to 2 metres in stormy conditions.

Southern Thailand’s east coast will see scattered thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Chumphon, and Surat Thani. Morning temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C, peaking at 29 to 33°C. North of Surat Thani, variable winds will blow at 15 to 35 km/hr with seas reaching 2 metres during storms. South of Surat Thani, winds will ease slightly with seas at around 1 metre, increasing during thundershowers.

The west coast is also in for wet conditions, especially in Ranong, Phuket, and Trang. Morning lows will hover around 24 to 25°C, with daytime highs from 28 to 32°C. Winds north of Krabi will reach up to 35 km/hr with seas up to 2 metres in storms, while winds south of Krabi will blow at 15 to 30 km/hr with slightly calmer seas, according to the TMD.

In the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, fairly widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are expected. Minimum temperatures will be 25 to 26°C, climbing to 31 to 32°C in the afternoon. Winds will remain steady from the northeast at 10 to 20 km/hr.

The TMD advised residents and travellers to stay alert to changing weather, especially in coastal and mountainous areas where rain accumulation could increase risks of flash floods or landslides.
