February 16 weather: Cool mornings up north, more rain in South Thailand

Thailand will see morning fog and changeable conditions today, February 16, as a weak high-pressure system continues to cover the north, the northeast and the South China Sea, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

Cool mornings are forecast in the North and Northeast, while isolated thundershowers are expected in the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, as well as in the East.

Easterly and southeasterly winds are prevailing over the Gulf of Thailand and the South, while the northeast monsoon continues over the Gulf, the South and the Andaman Sea, bringing more rain to the South. In the lower Gulf, waves are expected to reach 1 to 2 metres, rising above 2 metres during thundershowers.

In Bangkok and the surrounding areas, light fog is expected in the morning, with isolated thundershowers forecast later. Minimum temperatures will be 25 to 26 degrees Celcius (°C), with highs of 34 to 36°C. Southeasterly winds will blow at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour (km/h).

7-day weather outlook (February 15 to 21)

The TMD said that on February 15, the weak high-pressure system covered upper Thailand and the South China Sea, bringing morning fog. Cool mornings were forecast in the North and Northeast, while isolated thundershowers were expected in the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, and in the East.

The northeast monsoon continued over the Gulf of Thailand, the South and the Andaman Sea, with isolated thundershowers in the South. Waves in the lower Gulf were forecast at 1 to 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in thundershowers.

From February 16 to 21, another high-pressure system from China is forecast to cover Vietnam, Laos and the South China Sea, strengthening southerly and southeasterly winds that will bring more moisture across upper Thailand and the South.

With hot conditions expected in upper Thailand, thundershowers with gusty winds are forecast, while the South is expected to see more rain with isolated heavy falls.

The TMD said the strengthened northeast monsoon will prevail over the Gulf of Thailand, the South and the Andaman Sea, with waves in the lower Gulf around 2 metres and above 2 metres during thundershowers.
