May 20 forecast warns of heavy rain across Thailand
Thailand is expected to see continued rainfall over the next 24 hours, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast in parts of the South, Northeast and East, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) today, May 20.
The department said a relatively strong southwest monsoon covering the upper Andaman Sea and Thailand, combined with a low-pressure cell over northern Vietnam, will bring widespread thunderstorms across the country.
Heavy rain is also forecast in some areas of North and Central Thailand, as well as Bangkok and nearby provinces.
Residents in affected areas have been warned to remain alert for flash floods and forest runoff, particularly near foothills, waterways and low-lying areas.
Strong winds are expected over the upper Andaman Sea, with waves measuring two to three metres high and exceeding three metres in storm areas. Waves in the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand are forecast at around two metres, rising above two metres during thunderstorms.
The department urged sailors to proceed with caution and avoid storm areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea were advised to remain ashore.

The forecast, from 6am today until 6am tomorrow, predicts thunderstorms across most regions.
In North Thailand, thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the region, with heavy rain in some areas.
Affected northern provinces are as follows: Nan, Tak, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun. Temperatures are expected to range between 24°C and 38°C.
The Northeast is forecast to receive thunderstorms in 70% of the region, with heavy to very heavy rain in some areas. Temperatures are forecast between 23°C and 34°C.
Affected northeastern provinces are as follows: Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani.
The Central region is expected to experience thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some areas.
Affected central provinces are as follows: Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom, Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi. Temperatures are forecast between 24°C and 35°C.
In East Thailand, thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with heavy to very heavy rain in some areas. Temperatures are expected to range from 25°C to 34°C, while waves may reach around two metres and rise higher during storms.
Affected eastern provinces are as follows: Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.
The South’s east coast is forecast to receive thunderstorms in 60% of the region, with heavy rain in some areas. Temperatures are forecast between 23°C and 35°C.
Affected southern provinces on the east coast are as follows: Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla.
The South’s west coast is expected to see the heaviest conditions, with thunderstorms forecast in 70% of the region and heavy to very heavy rain in some areas. Temperatures are expected between 23°C and 33°C.
Affected southern provinces on the west coast are as follows: Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun.
Bangkok and surrounding provinces are forecast to receive thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some locations. Temperatures are expected between 26°C and 36°C.
