A man has been arrested in Muang Pan district, Lampang, following the fatal shooting of his brother during an argument over land inheritance.

Police responding to reports of a gunshot in a local village yesterday night discovered the body of 55 year old Jaipan Wiwatphong, who had sustained a fatal shotgun wound to the chest. His brother, 52 year old Suchart, was apprehended at the scene.

The initial police report indicated that Suchart and Jaipan had been squabbling over a piece of land inherited from their parents. According to Suchart, their parents had initially allocated the land to him, and Jaipan had seemingly agreed to forgo his claim.

However, tensions flared when Jaipan requested a portion of the land to build a house. Suchart stated that he consented to this request but insisted that Jaipan construct the house at a distance from his dwelling. Jaipan’s refusal to comply with this request led to escalating arguments between the brothers.

“He asked for a share of the land to build a house, but I wanted him to build it farther away,” Suchart told police during the initial investigation, reported Bangkok Post.

Police have charged Suchart with murder and violating the Firearms Act.
