Trudeau to lead Liberals into next election despite resignation calls

Trudeau continues as Liberal leader, aiming for fourth consecutive term

On Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared his intention to lead the Liberal Party into the next election, despite calls from some party members for his resignation. Trudeau, aiming for a fourth term, would be the first Canadian prime minister in over a century to achieve four consecutive wins.

After a lengthy three-hour meeting on Wednesday, 20 Liberal lawmakers presented a letter urging Trudeau to step down before the next election. Trudeau stated that following “robust conversations,” the decision was made to proceed with him at the helm for the upcoming general elections. He retains the backing of most of the 153 Liberal Party members in the House of Commons.

Sean Casey, one of the lawmakers who signed the letter, expressed disappointment at Trudeau’s refusal to step down but acknowledged it was ultimately Trudeau’s choice to continue as leader. Casey mentioned that although Trudeau listened, he remained unswayed. “This was a decision he had every right to make and he made it,” Casey told news agency AP. “I did my job in voicing what I was hearing from constituents and now I have to direct my energy to winning my seat and not internal party matters. As far as I’m concerned, it is closed.”

Concerns about Trudeau’s leadership surfaced after recent defeats in two districts in Toronto and Montreal during special elections. The Liberal Party also relies on the support of at least one major party in Parliament, as they lack an outright majority.

The opposition Bloc Québécois leader has indicated their party will collaborate with the Conservatives and the New Democratic Party to topple the Liberal Party and trigger an election if the government fails to increase pensions. The federal election could be called anytime from now until next October.
