Boy, 8, fatally shot near Cumbria farm

Man arrested after 8-year-old boy shot near Cumbria farm

Jay Cartmell, an eight-year-old boy, has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting near a farm in Cumbria. The tragic event occurred on Saturday when authorities responded to reports of a child being ‘seriously injured by a firearm’ at Wheatsheaf Farm, near Warcop in Cumbria. Jay succumbed to severe head and facial injuries in the hospital.

A man in his 60s has been taken into custody in relation to the incident. Cumbria Police confirmed Jay suffered serious head injuries on land close to the A66, north of Warcop. They urge anyone who witnessed the event or the moments leading up to it to come forward with information.

Reports indicate that both Jay and the shooter were hunting rabbits at the time. A source revealed they had permission to be on the property, as there had been a long-standing agreement allowing them to hunt there. Following the incident, detectives were seen examining a nearby field. Locals observed police officers and paramedics moving purposefully across a small field off the A66 shortly after the shooting.

Frank Chalmers, 73, noticed several police cars and an air ambulance at around 3 pm while driving past the farm on his way home to Brough. He described the incident as a devastating tragedy for the family and community.

Two other witnesses saw crime scene investigators in white suits and marking the area about an hour after emergency services were called. Another resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, encountered the scene around 3 pm when heading towards Penrith. They saw a medical emergency helicopter in a small field, with police and medics actively responding to the situation.
