Teen girl claims ignorance after Nazi salute in Plymouth riot

Girl, 16, apologises for Nazi salute in Plymouth riot, claims ignorance

A 16-year-old girl, caught on video giving a Nazi salute and drinking vodka during riots in Plymouth, claims ignorance of the symbol’s meaning.

The teenager, who remains unnamed due to her age, participated in violent acts after joining an anti-immigration protest on August 5. The unrest led to assaults on police officers and the temporary closure of businesses.

Video evidence presented in court showed her throwing objects at police and blocking a police van. She also performed a Nazi salute during the chaos.

Judge Matson addressed her: “You have admitted your role in the violent disorder on Plymouth Royal Parade. It was appalling, violent behaviour that brought the city centre to a halt, significantly affecting those present, especially the police trying to manage the situation.”

The judge continued, “You struck an officer with a bottle while he was performing his duty. The Nazi salute you gave is a racist and deeply offensive gesture with no place in our society. You claimed ignorance of its meaning, yet still chose to make it. This symbol is a horrific representation of racism.”

Judge Matson noted that if the girl had been older, she would likely have faced jail time.

Addressing the court, the girl, who has no prior convictions, expressed regret: “What I did was really bad; I was childish. I was drunk and got caught up in the moment. I’m sorry.”

She stated she had not planned to join the far-right protest but got unintentionally involved. The judge also imposed a £26 surcharge on her family.

Two 17-year-old boys were also sentenced for their roles in the disturbance. One was filmed throwing a missile and a traffic cone at counter-protesters on the Royal Parade.

Judge Matson remarked he was “clearly on the front line,” participating in widespread violence. With no previous convictions, he received a nine-month referral order and was advised to address his cannabis use.

The other boy, described as “prolific throughout,” made obscene gestures at police, threw a can, and resisted being moved. He was also recorded chanting, “we want our country back.”

The judge acknowledged his significant personal trauma but stressed he could not blame immigrants for his situation. He received a 12-month referral order and a three-month curfew.
