The Crow reboot flops at box office with $4.6 million

Original director slams The Crow reboot as cynical cash-grab

The director of the original The Crow has harshly criticised the reboot that failed to perform well at the box office.

Released last week, the 2024 reboot of the 1994 film has disappointed both fans and critics. The movie opened with a mere $4.6 million against a $50 million budget, according to Variety.

Bill Skarsgård stars as The Crow in this new take on James O’Barr’s graphic novel. Despite the efforts of the filmmakers, the movie’s lacklustre performance has left one person pleased—Alex Proyas, the director of the 1994 original.

Proyas expressed his thoughts on Facebook, stating, “I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab. Not much cash to grab it seems.” He also shared negative reviews, with one calling it “the worst movie of the year.” Proyas added, “The review we’ve all been waiting for. It’s a bit like flogging a dead horse now so I think I’ll stop after this…until another funny one comes along.”

Proyas has long opposed the idea of rebooting The Crow. During the original film’s production, tragedy struck when Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, was fatally injured on set by a bullet fragment from a prop handgun.

In 2017, Proyas reflected on the film on Facebook, calling it Lee’s “lasting legacy” and arguing that it should not be remade. “If it wasn’t for Brandon you may never have even heard of this poignant little underground comic.”

“It is Brandon’s movie. I believe it is a special case where Hollywood should just let it remain a testament to a man’s immense talent and ultimate sacrifice – and not have others re-write that story or add to it,” he said.

The Crow (2024) currently holds a 20 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes after receiving 100 mostly negative reviews.
