Three charged with murder after inmate death in Leicester prison

Inmates charged following death at HMP Fosse Way in Leicester

Authorities have charged three men with murder following the death of an inmate at HMP Fosse Way. A 31-year-old prisoner was discovered unresponsive in his Leicester prison cell on Tuesday and pronounced dead at the scene by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Shaan Karim, 38, Thierry Robinson, 21, and Ashirie Smith, 18, face murder charges. Two other men, aged 27 and 28, initially arrested on suspicion of murder, have been released under investigation. A sixth man, aged 35, also released under investigation, had previously been arrested on the same suspicion.

Karim, Robinson, and Smith remain in custody and are scheduled to appear at Leicester Magistrates Court on Friday.

HMP Fosse Way, a Category C Leicester prison accommodating about 1,715 inmates, opened last year on the former site of HMP Glen Parva, which closed in 2017. Operated by services firm Serco, the prison aims to reduce reoffending through education, training, and employment opportunities for released prisoners.

A Serco spokesman confirmed the death and stated that Leicestershire Police are investigating the incident.
