Yala tightens security after reports of insurgent group movement

Security agencies in Yala raised security measures to the highest level today, April 2, after detecting movement by violent groups believed to be preparing attacks in urban areas and economic zones.

Units were told to tighten surveillance in high-risk areas, particularly around town centres and key commercial zones.

Officers also stepped up screening at checkpoints, focusing on cars and motorcycles that could be used to assemble or carry improvised explosive devices, including car bombs and pipe bombs.

Security intelligence units warned agencies to heighten vigilance after noting a shift in tactics. The warning includes alleged attempts to plant improvised explosives targeting officers’ vehicles during patrols, as well as small, dispersed blasts in public areas such as petrol stations, convenience stores and public infrastructure.

The warning also covers the risk of attacks on operating bases and checkpoints in higher-risk areas.

According to officials, there is also concern about decoy attacks intended to lure officers to inspect a scene before a second explosion is triggered.

Thairath reported that another risk involves attacks on officers while they are on leave, travelling back to their home areas.

In addition, the Emergency Situation Administration Committee approved extending enforcement of the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations, B.E. 2548 (2005), for an 84th period.

The extension covers 18 districts across the three southern border provinces, with five districts in Pattani, three in Yala and 10 in Narathiwat. The district of Su-ngai Kolok was also listed as an additional area under the severe emergency designation.

The extension will be in effect from April 20 to July 19, 2026, to allow agencies to continue operations and maintain order in the area.
