Two soldiers injured in Yala province IED attack
Patrol mission turns violent as unrest continues to plague the Deep South

Two soldiers were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting military engineers from the 15th Engineer Battalion. The incident occurred at 5pm yesterday, May 7, in Raman district, Yala province, as the soldiers were returning to their base after completing a canal dredging mission.
The attack took place in front of a cemetery in the village of Kototura, subdistrict Kototura. Security personnel, including military, police and administrative officers, rushed to the scene to investigate the explosion.
Upon arrival, they discovered two injured soldiers from the 15th Engineer Battalion, who were part of the canal dredging team working along the railway road between Ban Maikaen, Noen Ngam subdistrict, and Ban Atakuwowo, Kototura subdistrict.
The injured soldiers were identified as 53 year old Sergeant Major First Class Jamorn Channiyom, who suffered from ear ringing, and 40 year old Sergeant Panupong Phanchan, who sustained a chest injury and a lacerated eyebrow.
Emergency services from Raman district transported the injured soldiers to Raman Hospital. Preliminary investigations indicated that the soldiers had just finished their canal dredging mission along the railway road and were on their way back to their quarters when the perpetrators detonated the IED hidden by the roadside, causing a loud explosion, reported KhaoSod.
Police suspect the attack was part of an ongoing campaign of violence in the area, which has seen a series of violent incidents over the past few weeks.

In similar news, a powerful roadside bomb exploded in Narathiwat on March 11, narrowly missing a vehicle carrying territorial defence volunteers in what police believe was an insurgent attack. Despite the force of the blast on the Sungai Kolok-Sungai Padi road, there were no reported injuries, though the scene sustained heavy damage.
The explosion occurred at 1.59pm near a U-turn in Ban Bango Humo, located in Mueang subdistrict, Sungai Padi district. Police Colonel Mataha Muna, chief of Sungai Padi Police Station, confirmed the incident, which triggered an immediate military deployment to the area.
