Sleeping Indian tourists in viral Pattaya video were migrants
A viral video that took social media by storm last week, allegedly showing Indian tourists snoozing on Pattaya Beach, has been debunked. The supposed tourists were, in fact, migrants.
The controversial video, widely shared online, drew heavy criticism after it appeared to capture over 100 Indian tourists taking over a tract of Pattaya Beach.
They were filmed setting up impromptu sleeping arrangements, indulging in alcohol, and leaving behind a mess, sparking outrage over the perceived damage to the beach’s reputation and cleanliness.
Pattaya City Mayor Poramet Ngampichet swiftly stepped in to clear the air. He underscored that Pattaya’s public beach is open to visitors from across the globe, welcoming both locals and international guests.
While emphasising the city’s hospitality, the Mayor stressed the importance of adhering to guidelines to keep the beach pristine and enjoyable for all. He also noted that the Pattaya Municipality has tasked local staff with maintaining order and focusing on cleanliness, ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone.
Adding a twist to the tale, Dr Deo Kumar Singh, President of the Indian Association of Chon Buri, revealed that the individuals caught on camera were not Indians after all.
Following a thorough investigation, he identified them as migrant workers from countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, who had been mistakenly assumed to be Indian due to their similar appearances.
These migrants reportedly set up temporary resting spots on the beach overnight before heading to Bangkok the next morning.
Local beach umbrella operators chimed in, expressing their concerns about the unusual incident. They pointed out that while European tourists regularly visit to soak up the sun during daylight hours, this overnight setup was unprecedented and deemed inappropriate.
The operators urged police to tighten regulations to uphold the beach’s image.
In a proactive move, Dr Kumar Singh announced plans to work closely with local officials to educate Indian tourists about Thailand’s rules and expectations.
This initiative will involve organising campaigns to foster proper conduct, promote cleanliness, and encourage collaboration with local communities.
