Thai fishermen rescued a foreign woman who had been floating in the middle of the sea for six hours in the southern province of Krabi yesterday, February 10.

A Thai woman, Arun, reported to the community leader in Krabi’s Khlong Thom district that one of her employees found a foreign woman floating in the sea about 6 kilometres from Koh Lanta. She was identified as 46 year old Malanie but her nationality was not disclosed to the public.

Arun explained that her employees had left the coast on a boat named Janjira Nam Chok (meaning Janjira brings luck) for squid fishing. They spotted the woman calling for help and immediately rushed to bring her aboard.

The fishermen offered the foreigner food and drink. As she did not appear to have any serious health issues, they continued their work until the next morning before bringing her back to shore.

Malanie later told the community leader that she had been staying at the accommodation on Koh Lanta Yai and had gone for a swim the previous evening. She became lost and, surrounded by darkness, was unable to find her way back to shore.

She floated in the water for over six hours until midnight, when the fishing boat came near her. The community leader contacted her accommodation staff, who came to collect her later that day.

Malanie expressed her gratitude to the fishermen and posed for a photo with the boat owner and the community leader before leaving.

A similar rescue occurred in Koh Chang in November last year when ferry workers successfully rescued a Swedish man from the sea near Koh Chang, an island in the southeastern province of Trat.

It was unclear whether the foreigner accidentally fell into the water or intentionally jumped from the boat. The incident left him in a serious condition, and there were no further updates on his health.

Another rescue took place in Phuket in October last year, when seven foreign passengers were saved from a longtail boat that capsized just 10 minutes after departure.
