A thief attempted to steal from a soldier’s home to fund his drug habit, only to be quickly apprehended and tied to a post before police arrived. The burglary took place in the Ban Muang Samakkhi community in the Udon Thani.

Police Lieutenant Sata Porn Sawatdee received a report around 3pm yesterday, July 18, about a break-in at a house in the Ban Muang Samakkhi. The homeowner and neighbours had managed to detain the suspect before the police arrived.

At the scene, 29 year old Sergeant Udom Thongthip from the 13th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, and 18 year old Theppitak Naprom were found restraining the suspect, later identified as 42 year old Manop Lakhonsi.

Manop had been tied to a metal post in front of the house after resisting arrest and displaying signs of methamphetamine intoxication, making incoherent statements. The homeowner claimed that Manop climbed the fence, and began rummaging through items on his property.

Udom recounted that he had just finished his shift and was driving home when his wife’s younger brother called to inform him about the intruder. He immediately parked in front of his house and saw the suspect trying to climb back over the fence.

Udom chased him down, and despite the suspect’s resistance, he, his brother-in-law, and neighbours managed to subdue and tie him to a metal post in front of a neighbour’s house, awaiting the police.

Upon the police’s arrival, Manop was tested for drugs, and his urine sample turned purple, indicating the presence of methamphetamine. In his intoxicated state, Manop confessed to being a general labourer who scavenged and sold scraps to buy methamphetamine and marijuana.

On days when he earned more from selling scraps, he would buy food. He admitted that the drugs made him feel energetic and happy, which led him to believe he could work harder and longer without getting tired. He confessed to the burglary, stating it was his first time committing such a crime.

The local police took Manop into custody and continued their investigation at the Udon Thani Police Station, reported KhaoSod
