Udon Thani ride-hailing rider criticised after video shows passenger berated over weight

In a recent example of the pot calling the kettle black, an overweight motorcycle ride-hailing rider in Udon Thani has been criticised online after a video showed him berating an overweight passenger during a trip, leading to an argument recorded on camera.

The clip was shared by the Facebook page อยากดังเดี๋ยวจัดให้ รีเทริน์ part 7, on March 15, with the caption stating “Riders shouldn’t speak to passengers like this… saying ‘we don’t take fat people’ these days. I can’t believe people like this still exist. Just watch the video. #UdonThani #Grab”

In the video, the rider is heard scolding the passenger about their weight and saying people who are overweight should not use the service. The passenger replies that the rider should make it clear beforehand that overweight customers are not accepted.

The rider responds that the rider “does not take overweight passengers” and claims the practice has existed for a long time. He also says cancelling rides is not a serious issue, adding, “You can ask any driver,” in the clip.

The passenger then tells the rider he should have said so earlier and should not judge others. “Don’t judge others for being fat. You’re not thin either. You’re overweight too,” the passenger says.

After the video circulated, the passenger explained they had booked the ride through an app and got on the motorcycle as normal when the rider arrived. They said the rider then rode slowly, at about 20 to 30 kilometres per hour, reported KhaoSod.

The passenger said they asked the rider to go faster because they were worried about missing a connecting bus. To which he reportedly replied, “Stop talking. You’re heavy, it’s hard to balance.”

The rider also allegedly said he initially did not want to accept the ride because of the passenger’s weight, prompting the passenger to take out a mobile phone and begin recording.

The post drew a wave of critical comments, with users accusing the rider of being in the wrong and telling him he should not accept bookings if he does not want to take certain passengers.

Others said choosing customers could cost him work, with some commenters saying they accept all passengers, including those who are overweight, and urging the rider to find another job if he cannot provide the service.
