Man caught cooking dog meat at Udon Thani home

Police in Udon Thani arrested a man in Chiang Yuen subdistrict yesterday, April 2, after a Facebook post led police to his home, where officers found him cooking dog meat.

Officers from Huai Luang Subdistrict Police Station went to investigate the property at 11am. Upon arrival, they found the suspect, identified as 49 year old Gok, cooking meat in a pot for a local dish called hyoi.

When questioned, the suspect reportedly admitted the meat came from a dog.

According to officers, Gok said the animal had died after being hit by a vehicle. He claimed the dog’s owner had asked him to bury it and offered him a bottle of local white liquor in return, but he chose instead to take the carcass home and cook it.

The suspect also told police he had eaten dogs before and liked it. He reportedly acknowledged that doing so was against the law, but insisted he had not killed the animal himself.

The case first gained public attention after a Facebook user shared photos appearing to show meat laid out on trays beside plastic bags containing portions of it.

In the post, the user questioned whether hunger could justify such an act and asked how legal action could be pursued. The post also tagged local agencies and argued that the case breached Thailand’s animal welfare law.

The author believed the dog may have belonged to someone, writing, “If you have nothing to eat, go work or buy food like everyone else. There’s plenty of pork, fish, and chicken. Leave the dogs alone.”

They also alleged that the suspect was locally known for drinking and drug use, and said a similar dog had disappeared in the area last year in suspicious circumstances.

Khaosod reported that officers seized the cooked meat and gave the suspect a urine test, which was positive for methamphetamine. Police said Gok admitted to using the drug the previous day.

He was charged with possession and use of a Category 1 narcotic and animal cruelty under Thailand’s animal welfare law. Police said he remained in custody pending further legal action.

Similarly, a man in Udon Thani’s Ban Dung district allegedly killed a dog and displayed its remains for sale. The dog, believed to have fled in panic due to new year fireworks, fell victim to the man’s disturbed behaviour.
