Thailand rattled by tremors as 10 mini quakes rock region

Experts urge vigilance as seismic activity stirs fears of stronger quakes ahead

Residents in northern and northeastern Thailand woke up to a shaky surprise this morning after a swarm of small earthquakes hit the region, sending tremors through three provinces and sparking concern online.

Ten mild earthquakes were recorded today, May 6, in parts of Myanmar and across northern and northeastern Thailand, according to the Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation Division. The tremors, ranging in magnitude from 1.3 to 3.0, were logged during the early hours of today, with three quakes occurring within Thai territory.

The first quake struck at 1.17am in Ban Sa subdistrict, Chae Hom district of Lampang province. It measured 1.3 in magnitude and had a shallow depth of just 1 kilometre.

Just 10 minutes later at 1.27am, another tremor, also measuring 1.3 magnitude, hit Tham Lot subdistrict in Mae Hong Son’s Pang Mapha district, again at a depth of 1 kilometre.

The third and strongest of the Thai quakes was recorded at 1.36am in Bun Than subdistrict, Suwannakhuha district of Nong Bua Lamphu province. It registered a magnitude of 3.0 and a depth of 4 kilometres. This one was reportedly felt by residents, although no injuries or property damage have been reported so far.

Officials from the Earthquake Observation Division have urged residents to remain calm and stay alert by following updates from official channels.

“We recommend people check the structural safety of their homes and prepare emergency supplies.”

Though these quakes were relatively minor, the cluster of seismic activity is a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to tectonic shifts, especially near the Myanmar border, a known fault zone, reported The Nation.

For real-time earthquake alerts, the department encourages the public to follow EarthquakeTMD on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Telegram, YouTube, and TikTok, or to install the dedicated mobile app for timely notifications and safety tips.

So far, the situation is stable, and government officials continue to monitor the region for aftershocks.
