Fake DSI agents target ex-Senate candidates in Amnat Charoen

Investigation underway into group accused of impersonating officials

A confidential letter was urgently sent by the governor of Amnat Charoen, Narong Thepsena, to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior. In it, he detailed a disturbing incident in which three individuals claiming to be from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) allegedly forced two former Senate candidates to confess to electoral fraud, all while disabling the security cameras.

On Sunday, May 4, a report from Mueang Amnat Charoen district highlighted the suspicious activities of the group. They allegedly posed as DSI officials to gather information about the Senate election from two people, beginning with 57 year old former Senate candidate, Praiwan Kaewpuang.

The group, comprising three men in a grey sedan with a red Bangkok license plate, entered her home around 9am without wearing uniforms or displaying official identification.

They disconnected her CCTV system to prevent recording and pressured her into admitting to electoral misconduct, falsely claiming others had already confessed. Pairawan repeatedly questioned their legitimacy and ultimately refused to provide information, distrusting their claim of being genuine officials.

Later the same day, at approximately 4pm, the group approached 65 year old former Senate candidate, Bunlom Wannaphat, in Mueang district’s Kai Kam subdistrict. The group, again without official attire or identification, urged her to provide election-related information, even attempting to use a projector for persuasion.

Bunlom denied their requests, doubting their authenticity. When she refused to cooperate, the group moved to visit Pisamai Khemthong, another former candidate in the same subdistrict, but did not find her at home. They then left the area in a grey BYD electric car, also with a red Bangkok license plate, reported KhaoSod.

The Amnat Charoen province has informed the Ministry of Interior of these events, emphasising the need for local district officials, village headmen, and community leaders to vigilantly protect citizens’ rights and maintain public safety.

Cooperation with relevant agencies for information sharing and investigations has been stressed to ensure adherence to laws and regulations safeguarding public freedoms.
