Thailand braces for more rainfall, TMD warns of flash floods

Heavy deluge continues to drown most Thai provinces, flooding possible

Weather conditions in Thailand are set to bring heavy rainfall across 48 provinces, including the north, northeast, Bangkok, and eastern Thailand.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of potential flash floods in some areas due to a 70-80% chance of rain. Residents in these regions should be cautious of heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation, which may lead to flash floods, forest runoff, and landslides, especially in mountainous areas and low-lying regions.

In Bangkok and its vicinity, thunderstorms are expected in 70% of the area, with heavy rains in certain spots. Temperatures will range from a minimum of 25-26°C to a maximum of 31-33°C.

For northern Thailand, thunderstorms are anticipated in 80% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Temperatures will range between 23 and 25°C at the lowest and 28-33°C at the highest.

In the northeast, thunderstorms will cover 70% of the area with heavy rain in provinces such as Loei and Nong Khai. Temperatures are predicted to drop to 23-25°C at night and rise to 28-33°C during the day.

Central Thailand will experience thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with notable rainfall in Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi. The temperature will vary from 23-26°C to 33-35°C.

East Thailand anticipates thunderstorms in 80% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rain in provinces such as Nakhon Nayok and Prachinburi. The lowest temperatures will be 24-25°C, and the highest will be 31-33°C. Sea waves are expected to reach approximately 1 metre, rising to over 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.

The eastern coast of southern Thailand will see thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Temperatures will range from 23-25°C to 32-35°C. The sea will have waves about 1 metre high, exceeding 2 metres during thunderstorms, reported KhaoSod.

On the west coast, 60% of the area will experience thunderstorms, with significant rainfall in Ranong and Phang Nga. Temperatures will vary between 24-26°C at night and 29-34°C during the day. The sea, from Phang Nga northwards, will have waves reaching 2 metres, and over 2 metres in thunderstorm conditions. In the south of Phuket, waves will be 1-2 metres high, exceeding 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.
