The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued reports of a strong high-pressure system from China that continues to cover Upper Thailand, causing temperatures to drop further by 1 to 2 degrees Celcius (°C) today, January 8.

The TMD forecasts cool to cold weather across the country for the next few days. Strong winds will accompany the temperature drop.

  • North & Northeast: Residents will experience cool to cold conditions. Over the next three days, temperatures here will drop by 3 to 5°C.
  • Central, East, & Bangkok: Mornings will remain cool. These regions expect a temperature decrease of 2 to 4°C.
  • Dust Update: Strong winds have successfully dispersed particulate matter, keeping PM2.5 accumulation at low to moderate levels.

A strong northeast monsoon currently prevails over the Gulf of Thailand and the South. While rainfall is decreasing, isolated thunderstorms persist in the lower South.

  • Gulf of Thailand: Waves are reaching 2 to 3 meters, and exceeding 3 meters in thunderstorm areas.
  • Andaman Sea: Waves are 1 to 2 meters offshore.

The TMD advises small boats in the Gulf of Thailand to remain ashore until January 10. Residents along the eastern coast of the South should beware of dangerous inshore surf.

The cold spell will weaken starting Sunday, January 11. As the high-pressure system dissipates, temperatures in Upper Thailand will rise. However, mornings will remain cool with likely fog accumulation.

Additionally, the Seismological Bureau detected five minor earthquakes centred in Myanmar between January 7 and 8, ranging from 2.2 to 4.1 magnitude. The TMD confirms that these tremors had no impact on Thailand.
