A 39 year old man drowned in a village pond in Surin province in front of family and locals, with rescue operations taking four hours to retrieve his body. The incident occurred yesterday, February 5, in Baan Angkan, Mueang district, Surin.
Police from Tenmee Mueang station and Surin rescue teams were alerted to the drowning at the large pond, around 2 rai (3.2sqm) in size. Upon arrival, they found a large crowd gathered.
Divers searched for the man and, after four hours, recovered the body of Attanong Patcharanu, a resident of Ban Angkan. Police coordinated with on-site medical examiners for an autopsy, and the family, having no suspicions regarding the cause of death, proceeded with religious rituals.
Boonrod Tayahom, the man’s 50 year old uncle, witnessed the incident and recounted that Attanong had been helping clean the village pond since the morning, using tools to remove leaves and debris. After completing the task, Attanong decided to bathe in the pond.

However, while swimming across, he appeared to lose strength and struggled before disappearing underwater. Bystanders attempted to assist but were unsuccessful.
A relative, referred to as A, mentioned that despite being strong and a capable swimmer, Attanong might have been fatigued or suffered from cramps due to exhaustion, leading to the drowning. The family is deeply saddened by the unexpected tragedy, reported KhaoSod.
Initial police investigations suggest the drowning may have resulted from fatigue or cramps, preventing Attanong from saving himself. His body was handed over to the family for religious ceremonies.
In similar news, a 24 year old rider and volunteer from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation jumped into the Chao Phraya River to rescue a 16 year old girl who had fallen in. The incident took place on February 3 at 3.30pm, and the girl was subsequently taken to Ang Thong Hospital for treatment.
