Heavy rainfall warning issued for 40 Thai provinces

Thunderstorms continues across Thailand, strong winds predicted

The Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning for today, June 30, forecasting heavy rainfall across 40 provinces in Thailand, including Bangkok, which is expected to experience significant downpours.

Over the next 24 hours, the upper northern, upper northeastern, western central, and eastern regions are expected to experience heavy rain. This weather pattern is due to a moderate southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, along with a low-pressure system over northern Vietnam.

In the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, moderate winds are anticipated, with waves expected to remain at around two metres.

Thailand’s northern region will see thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain expected in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Uttaradit, and Tak. Temperatures will range from 23 to 24°C at the lowest, to 31 to 34°C, with southwesterly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres an hour (km/h).

In the northeastern region, thunderstorms are expected in 40% of the area, with some heavy rain in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, and Mukdahan. Temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C at the lowest to highs at 31 to 34°C, with southwesterly winds at 10 to 20 km/h.

The central region will experience thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in Uthai Thani, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon. Temperatures will range from 24 to 25°C to highs at 33 to 35°C, accompanied by southwesterly winds at 10 to 20 km/h.

Strong winds expected

The eastern region will have thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27°C to highs of 30 to 33°C, with southwesterly winds at 15 to 35 km/h. Waves in the sea are expected to be 1 to 2 metres high, exceeding 2 metres during thunderstorms.

Southern Thailand (east coast) will have thunderstorms in 30% of the area, mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 35°C, with southwesterly winds at 15 to 30 km/h. Sea waves could reach about 1 metre, exceeding 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.

Southern Thailand (west coast) will also see thunderstorms in 30% of the area, primarily in Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C to highs of 32 to 34°C. From Phuket northwards, southwesterly winds will be 20 to 35 km/h, with sea waves around 2 metres. From Krabi southwards, winds will be 15 to 35 km/h, with waves reaching 1 to 2 metres and over 2 metres in thunderstorms.

Bangkok and surrounding areas are expected to have thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 25°C to highs of 32 to 35°C, accompanied by southwesterly winds at 10 to 20 km/h.
