Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Dusongyor market in Chanae district, Narathiwat province, southern Thailand, tragedy struck when a lone gunman fatally shot a female para-military ranger.

Without warning, the assailant drew a 9mm handgun and fired a fatal shot into the 30 year old off-duty ranger’s head, killing Nurisan Phromsri instantly. The sudden gunfire sent shockwaves throughout the market, triggering a chaotic frenzy as terrified shoppers and vendors fled for safety in every direction.

Authorities are now grappling with the chilling possibility that Nurisan’s murder may be linked to either a personal vendetta or the ongoing insurgency plaguing the region, reported Thai PBS World.

The grim reality is compounded by the recent loss of her younger brother, allegedly also a victim of insurgent violence.

In related news, a Thai soldier suffered a serious injury after a suicide attempt at a military camp in the central province of Prachin Buri. His motive was alleged bullying and pressure from senior officers at the camp.

A 22 year old Thai woman took to social media to seek justice for her older brother who is now being treated in an emergency room after the suicide attempt at 8pm on March 21. The sister told Channel 7 that her brother was a conscript at a military camp in Prachin Buri and reportedly jumped from his dormitory.

In other news, suspected insurgents ignited fires overnight at various locations in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat in southern Thailand, according to police reports. In Pattani, four separate convenience stores located in Mueang, Yaring, Yarang, and Khok Pho districts experienced arson. Additionally, car tyres were set on fire at three sites, two in Khok Pho and another in Panare.

Pattani’s Mueang district police chief, Police Colonel Jeffrey Saimankun, led his officers to investigate a 7-Eleven store in the Puyud subdistrict following reports of an arson attack around 1am last Friday, March 22. It took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the fire.
