Family seeks justice after prison boxing match death in Rayong
The wife and family of a 27 year old boxer are seeking justice who unexpectedly died after participating in a prison boxing match in Rayong, Thailand.
The boxer’s wife, 26 year old Suchada, raised suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his death, which occurred shortly after he competed in a sports day boxing event at Rayong Central Prison.
The incident took place on Thursday, December 5, with the boxer, Jirayu, reportedly vomiting and losing consciousness about an hour after stepping out of the ring. He was then rushed to Ban Khai Hospital, where he died two days later.
Suchada remains unconvinced that Jirayu’s death resulted from the boxing match, given the nature of his injuries, which she believes are inconsistent with those typically sustained in a boxing match, especially since gloves were used.
She has called for the prison to release footage from after the event and to conduct a transparent investigation into the matter.
Prison officers have confirmed that they will begin an inquiry to uncover the truth surrounding this disturbing incident.
Suchada accompanied her late husband’s family to Rayong Hospital to follow up on the autopsy results. Police officials were also present to receive the findings. However, hospital staff informed them that the autopsy had to be postponed because the operating room required preparation after a recent autopsy of an infected body.
Suchada was only able to submit her husband’s personal documents and must wait for the autopsy results. While the prison has communicated with local agencies to assist with funeral arrangements, they have not yet addressed the cause of death, only advising patience.
Suchada has stated that if the autopsy results raise any doubts, she will continue to pursue the truth. She plans to preserve her husband’s body and, if necessary, have it re-examined at the Police Hospital.
Jirayu’s mother, 57 year old Sunan expressed disbelief over her son’s death, stating that he has been boxing since he was a child and never sustained such injuries. Sunan wants to understand what happened after her son left the ring, convinced that his injuries were not a result of boxing.
