Family feud over inheritance sparks public dispute

A 48 year old woman reached out to the media to present her side of a family dispute after her stepson, appeared on a popular television show.

The woman’s stepson, 24 year old Phuwat, known as Joe, accused his step mother, Phattharaporn, step-siblings and the police, of conspiring to frame him with drugs to seize inheritance assets worth over a million baht and gold jewellery totaling 5 baht. This public appearance has gained Joe significant online attention.

Phattharaporn, today, April 8, expressed her desire to clarify the situation, as she had remained silent before this. She stated that she was unfairly portrayed as a malicious stepmother conspiring to seize assets.

Phattharaporn explained that she had a clear background and history with Joe’s family. After Joe’s father separated from his mother, Phattharaporn became his partner and moved into the family home in 2004.

Joe and his mother relocated elsewhere. The home was then shared with Joe’s grandparents, his elder brother, Phattharaporn, and her partner.

As years passed, Phattharaporn experienced issues with Joe’s father and moved out with her son, leaving four people in the home. As Joe’s grandmother fell ill, she requested Phattharaporn to manage the inheritance, a role she accepted as Joe was incarcerated and her son was under 20, thus unable to assume legal responsibilities.

Upon Joe’s release, Phattharaporn informed him of her role as the estate manager due to being unable to locate him earlier. She sold Joe’s father’s car and used the proceeds to buy items for Joe, including a motorcycle and mobile phone, leaving him with some capital. However, Joe did not utilise this to earn a living and was eventually imprisoned again.

After his second release, Joe returned to the family home seeking financial support. Phattharaporn proposed mortgaging the house to share the funds.

She transferred the estate management to Joe and proceeded with the mortgage, resulting in Joe receiving 3.5 million baht (US$101,270) over two rounds of mortgaging, while the remaining funds were used for home improvements to facilitate its sale.

However, due to an inflated valuation of 37 million baht (US$1,070,600), the property remained unsold. Phattharaporn was unsure if the current disputes arose from Joe being manipulated by others.

She speculated that the money Joe received might have already been spent, leading to his accusations against her and her son of plotting with the police to seize the inheritance.

Phattharaporn advised Joe that no harm would come to him except from his negative thoughts. She shared that despite Joe’s public accusations, he later contacted her in a friendly manner, seeking help to locate a missing gun, reported KhaoSod.

She emphasised speaking out to counter the growing narrative around Joe’s case, noting that although he struggled with basic tasks, he now livestreamed for extended periods. Phattharaporn believes certain people are influencing Joe for future gain if the mortgaged house is sold.

The story looks set to rumble on for a bit longer.
