Teen driver dies after causing four-vehicle collision in Kanchanaburi
Dashcam reveals overtaking attempt on winding mountain road leads to fatal crash
A 17 year old Thai boy lost his life after illegally driving a pickup truck and causing a four-vehicle collision in the Thong Pha Phum district of the central province of Kanchanaburi on Tuesday, October 14.
Officers from Thong Pha Phum Police Station received a report from the radio centre about a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 323, also known as the Thong Pha Phum-Sangkhla Buri Road, in the Tha Khanun subdistrict. Rescue teams from Kanchanaburi and the Boonwipha Foundation were dispatched to the scene.
At the site, officers found four severely damaged vehicles, one of which had veered off the road and crashed into a tree.
The collision was reportedly caused by a 17 year old boy, whose identity was withheld, driving a grey pickup truck. The teenager sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to his condition at Thong Pha Phum Hospital.
A Thai woman named Apinya, who was travelling with the boy, was injured, along with six other motorists and passengers from the remaining three vehicles.
Dashcam footage from one of the vehicles captured the crash. The teenage driver attempted to overtake another vehicle on the two-lane uphill road but failed to notice another pickup truck travelling in the opposite direction.
The teenager swerved right to avoid a head-on collision, but lost control of his vehicle. Two more vehicles then crashed as they were unable to brake in time. Some trucks were forced off the road, slamming into nearby trees.
Rescue workers and locals helped extract the injured from the wreckage and rushed them to Thong Pha Phum Hospital.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash site, collecting evidence and reviewing dashcam footage to determine the exact cause of the accident before proceeding with legal action.
In Thailand, the legal age to drive a car is 18 years old. Anyone under this age is not permitted to obtain a driving licence or operate a motor vehicle on public roads. Those found driving without a valid licence, especially minors, may face up to one month’s imprisonment, a fine of up to 1,000 baht, or both.
If a minor causes a serious accident, the penalty can be up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 200,000 baht. Their parents may also face legal charges.
